From the Dominican Republic to Virginia: A Journey We’ll Never Forget
For years, my wife had heard stories about life in the United States. We talked about the places I had lived, the experiences I had during my military career, and what everyday life was like in America. But hearing about it and actually seeing it are two completely different things.
Recently, we had the opportunity to take her first trip to the United States, and it became a memory our family will never forget.

From the Dominican Republic to Virginia, this journey was about more than travel. It was about family, graduation, new experiences, and making memories we'll never forget together.
A Special Reason for the Trip
This wasn't just a vacation.
The trip was especially meaningful because it coincided with my graduation from Virginia Commonwealth University. After years of balancing military retirement, family life, business responsibilities, and college courses, earning my degree was a major milestone.
Having my wife there to experience that moment with me made it even more special.
Seeing America Through New Eyes
One of the most interesting parts of the trip was watching my wife experience everything for the first time.
Things many Americans take for granted stood out immediately:
The size of the highways
The amount of traffic
The different styles of homes
The shopping centers
The variety of food options
Everywhere we went sparked new conversations and comparisons between life in the Dominican Republic and life in the United States.
Some things surprised her. Other things weren't exactly what she expected.
Family Time Matters Most
While visiting new places was exciting, the best part of the trip wasn't the sightseeing.
It was spending time with family.
Life moves fast, and when you live in another country, opportunities to gather with loved ones become even more valuable. Watching our family come together reminded us that no matter where you live, relationships are what truly matter.
The memories we created during this trip will stay with us much longer than any attraction or tourist destination.
The Cultural Differences
One thing we both noticed was how different daily life feels.
In the Dominican Republic, people often take more time to enjoy conversations, spend time outdoors, and connect with family and neighbors.
In America, everything feels faster.
Schedules are tighter. Roads are busier. People seem to always be moving toward the next task.
Neither way is right or wrong. They're simply different lifestyles.
Experiencing both worlds helps you appreciate the advantages and challenges of each.
A Proud Moment
As a retired Army veteran, husband, father, and now college graduate, standing on that stage represented more than earning a degree.
It represented perseverance.
Seeing my wife witness that achievement in person made all the sacrifices worth it.
Her support throughout the journey played a huge role in helping me reach that milestone.
What She Thought About America
When people ask what my wife thought about her first trip to America, the answer is simple:
She enjoyed it.
She loved spending time with family, experiencing new places, trying different foods, and seeing parts of the country she had only heard about before.
But she was also happy to return home.
Because at the end of the day, home isn't just a location.
Home is where your family is.
Final Thoughts
This trip reminded us of something important:
Travel isn't just about seeing new places. It's about gaining perspective.
Whether you're visiting the United States for the first time or moving to the Dominican Republic to start a new chapter, keeping an open mind can completely change your experience.
For us, this journey wasn't just about America.
It was about family, growth, gratitude, and creating memories together.
And that's something we'll never forget.
