Moving to the Dominican Republic sounds like a dream, but what's the real cost of day-to-day life? As a married expat couple living in Santo Domingo Este, we decided to break it all down for anyone thinking of making the move or simply curious about island budgeting.
Here's what we spend in a typical week living, loving, and hosting Airbnb guests in the DR.
1. Housing – $350/week We rent a two-bedroom apartment for about $1400/month, which breaks down to $350 per week. It's in a peaceful, residential area with local colmados nearby and just a short drive from the city center.
2. Groceries & Eating Out – $170/week We cook most of our meals at home. A typical grocery run includes rice, beans, chicken, fresh fruits, and vegetables from the market. We also treat ourselves to local eats like empanadas or pollo guisado at least once a week.
3. Utilities & Internet – $95/week Electricity, water, gas, and high-speed internet come to around $100/month. If we use the AC more during hot weeks, this might rise a bit.
4. Transportation – $120/week We own a car and make monthly payments. Between fuel and maintenance, it averages to about $140/month. Public transportation is available, but we enjoy the flexibility of driving.
5. Airbnb Hosting Costs – $30/week Above our apartment, we host a cozy one-bedroom Airbnb. Weekly costs include cleaning supplies, water refills, and small welcome touches for guests.
6. Miscellaneous – $100/week Phone data, laundry, local services, or the occasional snack—we budget around $20 weekly for those "little things."
Total Weekly Cost: $865 USD
Of course, costs can vary depending on your lifestyle, location, and family size. But for us, island life is not only beautiful—it's affordable. And the slower pace and strong community here are priceless.
