From Soldier to Santo Domingo: My First Year Living Abroad

From U.S. Army life to Caribbean island living — our first year in the Dominican Republic was anything but ordinary.
From U.S. Army life to Caribbean island living — our first year in the Dominican Republic was anything but ordinary.

Leaving behind 21 years of military life in the United States wasn’t easy. But after retiring from the Army, I felt something pulling me toward a new chapter—one filled with peace, purpose, and palm trees.

What started as a solo journey quickly turned into a full-blown life reset in the Dominican Republic.

🛫 Why the Dominican Republic?

I didn’t come for the resorts or the tourist life. I came to slow down, reconnect with myself, and experience a culture that values community, family, and joy. The warmth here isn't just in the weather—it’s in the people.

🧭 From Structure to Freedom

Military life gave me discipline. But moving here gave me freedom—and that came with its own challenges. From navigating a new language to adjusting to island time, it’s been a humbling (and sometimes hilarious) learning curve.

My wife Sheila, who’s Dominican, has helped me embrace a whole new way of living—and loving. Together, we’re raising our son and building something real on this island.

💡 Key Lessons from My First Year

  1. Patience Is a Superpower Life moves slower here. And that’s not a bad thing.

  2. You Need a Community Don’t isolate. Find your people. Ask questions. Connect.

  3. It’s Not Always Easy—But It’s Worth It Culture shock, bureaucracy, and language barriers are real. But so is the freedom and peace you can gain.
